Free Native Garden Designs

Wild Ones has recently launched a new website to help you create your own native garden with plants specific to your ecoregion. The website includes free professionally-designed garden plans for Toledo, as well as Boston, Chattanooga, Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, St. Louis, and Tallahassee.

The goal is to provide the tools and knowledge you need to get started, even if you’re new to native gardening. Each plan is downloadable, and includes a complete plant list.

The Toledo garden plan was created by Susan Hall, landscape designer, certified horticulturist and owner of Hidden in a Garden Design, together with Denise Gehring, a member of Wild Ones Oak Openings Region chapter who serves on the Green Ribbon Initiative Native Plant Working Group. Gehring is a rare plant monitor, and contract field botanist for Ohio Natural Areas & Preserves.

In addition to the schematic shown at the top of this page, there’s a very cool animated “walk through the garden,” complete with singing birds. Check it out and see if you don’t get inspired to start your garden today!
